Philippines Video: My Place to Relax

The saying about all work and no play makes life boring is very true. When the hustle and bustle of the city gets me wound up I go to my place to relax which happens to be in Macaleeng Pangasinan. With a sunset like this everyday and such a beautiful view from my front yard (beach) why would I ever leave? Notice the sounds of roosters in the morining.

Retire In Philippines:Anvaya Cove in Morong Bataan

Check out this video of the inside of a home in a medium to upscale community in Bataan not far from the Subic Free port area. If you haven’t been in the area of the former U.S. Navy base you may be very suprised. Many Americans chose to retire in Philippines and pick this area which is used to having Americans around. Myself I choose to live nearer Manila although this area would be my second choice. Here is a link for you to get more information Anvaya Cove

Filipino Language

The basis for the official language of the Philippines is Tagalog which is spoken by about 22 million people. According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Tagalog was selected as the basis of the national language in 1937. In 1939 Manuel L. Quezon named the national language “Wikang Pambansa” but 20 years later Secretary of Education, Jose Romero renamed it Pilipino to give it a national rather than ethnic label connotation.

In 1971, the language underwent another change and the national language was changed from Pilipino to Filipino. In 1987 under the new constitution Filipino became the national language and wording in the constitution specified “that as the Filipino language evolves, it shall be further developed and enriched on the basis of existing Philippine and other languages. So we’ve got the historical stuff out of the way let’s talk about some helpful phrases and words you should know when visiting or retiring in the Philippines.

Good Morning – Magandang umaga po (pronounced as Ma-gan-dang u-ma-ga po)
Good afternoon- Magandang hapon po (Ma-gan-dang ha-pon po)
Good evening- Maandang gabi po (Ma-gan-dang ga-bi po)
Maganda means” beautiful” or “good” and “po” radiates respect
How are you?- Kumusta po kayo? (Ku-mus-ta po ka-yo)
I am fine- Mabuti naman (Ma-bu-ti na-man)
What is your name? – Ano pangalan mo? (A-no pan-ga-lan mo)
I am John – Ako po si James (A-ko po si James)
How are you? – Kumusta po kayo? (Ku-mus-ta po ka-yo)
I’m fine – Mabuti naman (Ma-bu-ti na-man)
Thank you – Salamat po (Sa-la-mat po)
You are welcome – Walang anuman (Wa-lang a-nu-man)
What time is it? – Anong oras na po? (A-nong o-ras na po)

These are very common phrases that are easy to learn even though most people you encounter speak English very well. It is always nice to practice your Tagalog skills on Filipinos because then they see that you are at least trying to learn the language. Silay City Philippines

Silay City located in the province of Negros Occidental has a population of around 108,000 people. It includes a large commercial and fishing port and is the home to the Bacolod-Silay City International Airport. Often referred to as the “Paris of Negros”, it has a large collection of heritage houses that have been declared as historical landmarks. Silay City also has the distinction of being the second Philippine city to have been declared a museum city. (Reference: Wikipedia the Free Encyclopedia)

What made me interested in this city is how much of a part of Philippine History and Philippine Heritage it contains especially the story of the Princess Kansilay who led against an attack by pirates and lost her life. There is more about this princess and Silay City in two different videos I have included below. If you’d like to visit the city’s website it can be found at: The Official Website of Silay City

Places to Retire: Bohol

One of the first things you will notice about Bohol is the beauty. This province located in Central Visaya is true beauty. From the Chocolate Hills to the beautiful beaches and water this is definitely some place you could kick back and enjoy retirement in.

Bohol consists of 75 surrounding islands as well as the major island, Bohol Island. Bohol is the tenth largest island of the Philippines with a land area of 4,117 square km (1,590 sq mi) with coastlines of 261 km (162 mi) long. Bohol is east of Cebu and southwest of Leyte with Mindanao being just across the Bohol Sea.
Bohol is a popular tourist destination due to its beaches and resorts. The island of Panglao noted as one of the top ten diving locations in the world also is home to many diving centers and diving spots. The Chocolate Hills, so named because during the summer the effect of the grass on them turning brown makes it look like they are topped with chocolate, are another popular tourist attraction.

The climate of Bohol can be described as dry with rainy season happening between the months of June and October. Getting away from the coast you will experience a little bit cooler weather in the interior of the island. Census figures in 2000 showed a population of 1,137,268 Boholanos with an expected growth rate of 2.92%. The main language spoken is Boholana which is a dialect of Cebuano but there are plenty of speakers of English and Tagalog on the island. To learn more about Bohol and to see some awesome pictures visit the Official  Welcome to Bohol Website.

I was reading an article on the web about the price of airfare and came upon a site about this guy who was fired from one of the major airlines. He was pretty upset with them so he decided to get back at them and expose all of their secrets to people so they could get cheaper airfare and it just so happens he got rich doing it. He even had death threats against him because I guess he let out some stuff that he shouldn’t have. If you want to read about I suggest you click here.

Culture Clash: Can You Handle the Culture of The Philippines?

Culture Clash The latest book from well-known author and expert on foreigners living in The Philippines, Bob Martin along with his wife Feyma was recently released. Bob, who authored two other books on the Philippines 49 Ways to Make a Living In the Philippines and Retire Like a King teams this time with his lovely wife Feyma to give you a perspective about the culture clash from two different angles. Bob and Feyma met in the Philippines and moved to the United States after marrying and lived there for years. Bob’s expertise covers the inevitable culture clash when a foreigner moves to the Philippines from his home country while Feyma covers the clash a Filipino may have after living in another country and returning home to live.

If you’ve read any of the books that Bob has written before you know that his style of writing evokes humor as well as stories of lessons he has learned. I’m sure you will see the same kind of writing that Bob is known for with the addition of Feyma’s great writing abilities. If you have visited Bob’s website Live in the Philippines you can see the styles of both of the writers which provides the bonus of follow-ups to the book.

As Bob says in his description of the book “If you are thinking of moving to the Philippines, you need this book to make sure that the Philippine Lifestyle really is for you. Before you spend the money and time required to make such a major move, spend a few days reading this book to make sure it is right for you, and how to make the critical adjustment.” I would add to that if you have a spouse or children moving to the Philippines with you, share it with them so you are all prepared. Philippines Population

When choosing a place to retire people will sometimes be looking for an area that they can kick back, not be around alot of people, and enjoy some nice weather in their retirement age. This is totally different for me as I am retiring in the suburbs of one of the largest cities in the world moving from an area that barely has a population of 50,000. But I have always enjoyed the city life and the convience of having something to do all the time. When I read that the U.S. was gearing up for another census taking next year it peaked my interest a little about the population and how people are dispersed within the Philippines so I visited the Philippine Census webpage to look at the numbers. Now I had a idea about the area I am moving to but being a numbers person interested in such things as statistics I gave it a glance. The numbers I’m going to quote you are from the 2007 census but I’m trying to give you an idea of what to expect in the area of the Philippines where  you are planning to retire. The numbers have in most cases increased because they have for many years.

The total population of the Philippines in August of 2007 was 88,574,614 which was an increase from 76,506,928 in May of 2000. That’s a  growth of 2.04% from 2000-2007 and the projections for 2009 are 92.23 million.  The city of Manila alone in the 2007 census came to 1,660,714 and thats only the city proper. If you count what is known as Metro Manila or the National Capital Region the numbers jump up to 11,553,427. This is all in an area of 636 sq kilometers, so if you are looking to avoid the crowd this is not the place to be. One other thing, usually the provinces of Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, and Bulacan are added into this number moving it up to about 20 million.

Central Luzon which features such places as Pampanga Province, Angeles City, Zambales Province, and Olongapo had a population in 2007 of 9,720,982. This is anoither popular area for foreigners that move to the Philippines for retirement or whatever. I would imagine it’s well over 10 million now. The Western Visayas which includes Iloilo City and others has a population of close to 7 million, the Central Visayas which includes Cebu as well as other towns, comes in at 6.5 to 7 million. The Eastern Visayas which includes such places as Leyte and Samar shows a population of about 4 million. Anyway, if you’d like to look at the numbers in the particular province or town in which you plan on living check out The Philippines Census.
