The water is clear and the water temperature is very comfortable and you are guaranteed to see things underwater that you will not see anywhere. Check out a video I enjoyed from YouTube and think about making a trip to dive in the Philippines.

The following is a video of the place in the Philippines where I go when I want to get away from the city or crowds. My wife and I are actually having a beach house built on land she inherited and it should be finished sometime this year. If you are looking for loud parties and lots of people this is not the place to go but if you want a place to lie on the beach or snorkel or sailboat it’s the perfect place. My thanks to the Alaminos City Planning & Development Office for making this video.

There are many malls close to where I live including Mall of Asia and The Mall at the Fort. I recently found a video on YouTube highlighting just about all the malls I’ve visited in Manila. Thanks to the person who recorded it and I hope you all enjoy it.

Did you know that Google loves to rank Web 2 properties on page one many times overnight… My friend Howie just put out a NEW PDF revealing SIX new Web 2.0 sites that Google loves to rank. The cool part is they are not well known by the masses and you can use them to rank almost instantly. Even cooler, you can keep your wallet in your pants because he’s giving it all away. Warning though, he said he’s taking the PDF down in the next day so you need to hurry… click here

Since I travel so much from the U.S. and other destinations to the Philippines I keep a good eye on the prices of flights on the discount flight and hotel websites. While doing my daily scan I noticed a couple of low priced flights for the person who would be leaving for the Philippines soon. I’m talking within the next two weeks. First I found on CheapOair.com a flight from JFK airport in New York to Manila via Hong Kong coming in at $709 including taxes and fees. This is for a round trip airfare on Cathay Pacific, one of my favorite airlines to fly on. The service and everything on this airlines has always been top notch. This is a one stop flight with about an hour stopover in Hong Kong which would be about enough time to get a cup of coffee and head to the departing gate. Like I said I looked for the 14th of August with a return flight of 14 September. On the other side of the United States from LAX Los Angeles a flight on Asiana Air going through Seoul Korea on the same days would cost you $591. These are good prices and if you don’t live near Los Angeles or New York a flight there from just about anywhere in the U.S. should be $200 or less if you shop around. If you are planning to go to Manila I would advise you to keep your dates flexible and keep checking the sites for deals because getting to Manila and back for less than $1,000 is always good. Click on the banner below to check prices from CheapOair.com

The SM Mall of Asia opened on May 21, 2006 and is located at Bay City, Pasay City, Philippines. It is the 2nd largest shopping mall in the Philippines behind SM City North EDSA and has a land area of 42 hectares and a gross floor area of around 410,000 square meters. The mall is located near the SM Central Business Park and Manila Bay and attracts about 200,000 people per day. Its maximum capacity is a little over four million people.

Some of the popular features of the Mall of Asia include the country’s first IMAX theatre and the Center Stage Theatre where musical events can be held. Besides all of the anchor stores found in any SM Supermall this mall has the Taste Asia food court and SM Hypermarket. Another feature of the Mall of Asia is the Philippine’s first Olympic sized ice skating rink which measures at 61 by 30 meters. The skating rink was the venue for Skate Asia 2007 which was the first time the Philippines had ever hosted an international ice skating even. The mall also has an outdoor Music Hall which directly faces the sea and is often the site for popular concerts and events. Check out a video of this beautiful mall below.

For a day in the latter part of May the beach at Matabungkay, a picturesque coastal village in the town of Lian, Batangas, is the home for the Balsa Festival. A Balsa is a flat raft made of timber or other buoyant material such as bamboo used by people that lived along coasts or riverbanks long ago. These floats were used for transportation along shallow waters and for fisherman to get from the beach to their fishing boats and back. The balsa floats are propelled by a long bamboo pole that is long enough to reach down to the sandy beach floor and pushing off that floor. During the Balsa festival, one of the more fun Philippine festivals, there is plenty of food and refreshments as well as numerous displays and boat races. A Cultural Dance Competition tops off the festival and is something you should see. If you are in the area of Lian, Batangas please spend a day at the beach for the Balsa Festival.

Shopping in the Philippines can be a pleasurable as well interesting adventure. Let it be known that haggling for price is alive and well in the Philippines and in some places expected. Now if you are in the big cities and at the malls or modern stores most likely you can’t argue the price especially if it’s marked but if you have to ask the price you can usually negotiate it down at least a little bit.

Primarily the best items you will purchase in the Philippines are handicrafts, woodcarving, and articles made of shells. These handicrafts and such make very good souvenirs for friends and family or as a memento of your visit. Some of the handicrafts include place mats, coaster, wind chimes made of shells, bamboo trays and ceramic pots.

Other crafts available include unique baskets made of bamboo or rattan with different designs and colors. One place I found many different kinds of baskets was in Baguio at the market. This seems to be one of the best places for buying baskets not just from that area but all over the Philippines. There are also guys with horse drawn wagons that travel the neighborhood selling their own handmade baskets but in the last few years I have seen less and less of them and more of a move to the town markets.

Another handicraft is the beautiful woven Philippine mats that come from the Visayas. Some depictions of Philippine folk art and some have designs that match the most beautiful of painted art I have seen. I particularly like the mats I’ve seen in the lobbies of hotels and in restaurants.

If you are looking for affordable but beautiful jewelry the Philippines is the place to go. I have found some of the most lovely shell and mother of pearl jewelry ever. Mother of Pearl is the most common and you can get real good prices from the shops around the area of Market Market in Fort Bonifacio. Most of the shops are attended by what I assume to be Moslem women by the headgear they are wearing. I don’t know what the connection with the jewelry and the women are actually but I’m sure it depends on what part of the Philippines they are from. Anyway I’ve picked up such deals that I have sold the jewelry on EBay for 10 times what I paid for it and all the women in my family enjoy the gifts of this jewelry also.

There are deals on other items such as shoes and handbags, embroidery, and woodcarving to be found while shopping in the Philippines also. Just make sure that if you don’t see a price and you are not in a major department store, the price is probably negotiable.
